What are Affirmations?
Affirmations are what we say to ourselves each day. Whether we are doing it on purpose or subconsciously, every day we are affirming things about ourselves and our lives. Basically, anything we think or say to ourselves, or anything other people are saying and we are hearing is an affirmation. These shade our reality, creating behaviors, language, and perceptions. Look honestly at your life, it will show you exactly what you have been affirming. Each day consciously choose your reality by starting with positive affirmations.
How Do Affirmations Work?
Every day your brain has a large amount of information it has to process every single second. Research is showing up to 11 million bits of information per second. It immediately processes your thoughts, real or not and reacts appropriately. For example, think of a time when you watched a movie that was scary. Even though you knew it wasn’t real your body still reacted as if it was. Sweaty palms, accelerated heart rate, maybe even some screaming.
This is why positive affirmations and thinking is important. Your brain will take that thought and immediately plan for it.
The Science Behind Affirmations
Besides giving you the daily affirmation that motivates you to think differently the biggest effect is neuroplasticity.
Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change throughout a person’s life. It works by the brain pruning or deleting neural connections that are no longer necessary or used. It strengthens the ones that are necessary and used. So by constantly affirming something your brain creates new neural pathways.
How Do You Create Affirmations?
You can use the affirmations below or create your own. If you decide to make up your own, make sure to word them in the present otherwise you are telling your subconscious you are working on it rather than it is.
For example, instead of saying I am becoming healthy, say I am healthy. If that doesn’t feel true then change the wording until it does. You could choose to say each day I make changes for better health.
Also, be sure to phrase it in the positive.
If you are affirming on a regular basis and not seeing a change then most likely you are subconsciously telling yourself something contradictory.
